Pilgrim Mass in Santiago

I am simply going to post photos I took after the Pilgrim’s Mass in the Cathedral the day after I arrived. I witnessed the ceremony of the Botafumeiro when a large incense burner is lit and swung on ropes through the cathedral above the congregation.

Apparently in Medieval times it was introduced to cover the smell of the pilgrims who had been walking for months but didn’t enjoy the modern things we take for granted – showers, buses, a change of clothes, soap….
